…better and better!
The largest freely accessible (Site notre bureau spécialisé) database in the world has been enriched with an Asian competition. The golf trophy, which has existed since 1970, will celebrate its 25th edition on January 6, and the city of Basra will host the traditional competition in Iraq for the first time since 1979. The tournament, set up at the request of the king’s son Saudi Arabia, is Kuwait’s record holder with ten titles, followed by Iraq, Qatar and Saudi Arabia – Kuwait has only won the Gulf Cup once since 1998.
There are no clear favorites in this year’s edition, rather Saudi Arabia and Qatar as well as the United Arab Emirates, Oman, defending champions Bahrain and, under new coach Casas, also host the ‘Iraq. World Cup contenders Saudi Arabia and Qatar will feature second-row players. No big surprises are expected from the other two participants, Kuwait and Yemen. Along with record goalscorer Ali Mabkhout, the Emirates’ second most valuable player is absent from Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s squad.

The constellation of groups with Saudi Arabia and Yemen, which have been in a bloody conflict since 2015, is remarkable. On Sunday, the Iraqi Prime Minister confirmed the suspension of all visa fees to facilitate entry into the country. Customs duties have been lifted, the airport has been renovated and Saudi Arabia has opened border crossings to allow fans from Yemen to travel to Iraq for free.
