Prospect at Bayern questionable
After six months, Yann Sommer and FC Bayern could part ways again. As the ‘Kicker’ reports, a farewell to the 34-year-old keeper this summer is « almost certain ». The reason for this is the less promising prospect in Munich for the Swiss national goalkeeper, hired as a replacement after the accident by Manuel Neuer.
Neuer is making great strides in his rehabilitation journey and if all goes according to plan, he should be back between positions next season. The former Gladbach player wants to play with Switzerland at the 2024 European Championships in Germany – as number one in goal. He needs match practice for that. A substitute goalkeeper role behind Neuer, who also has the European Championship in mind with the German side, would not be helpful for Sommer.
According to the report, there are four interested parties from abroad for Sommer, who has a contract with the German record champions until 2025. Should Neuer return to his former strength, there would be a « gentlemen’s agreement » between the club and player he should leave. The candidates are AS Monaco, Villarreal FC, Valencia FC and Leicester City. As a result, the Monegasques are looking for a replacement for Bayern loanee Alexander Nübel, whose loan deal in the Principality expires at the end of the season. According to ‘L’Équipe’, there will be no firm commitment beyond that, and the deal with Munich doesn’t include a purchase option anyway.

Villarreal traded first-choice goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli to Ajax Amsterdam this winter, and since then 40-year-old veteran Pepe Reina has mostly played in goal, the work paper of which ends. Giorgi Mamardashvili is ready for Valencia. With a market value of €25m, the 22-year-old is one of the top 15 goalkeepers in the world and was hugely popular last summer. At Leicester City, Sommer is expected to wait until the end of the season to see if the « Foxes » will hold up in class or have to move to the second division. Danny Ward initially kept goal there before being replaced by Daniel Iversen in mid-March.
Pickford to Courtois: The most valuable keepers in the world
Sommer came to Munich this winter for €8m and has conceded 30 goals in 24 competitive appearances so far while keeping eight clean sheets. Before moving to Bayern Munich, Manchester United was also an option, and according to ‘Bild’, that interest is likely to continue.
