Some clubs are simply “too big to fail”. But this season it’s clear that big-name clubs are having to fight harder than ever to stay in the league and could end up collapsing.
These clubs are currently in the midst of a relegation battle.
Wolves have been regularly represented in the Bundesliga since the 1997/98 season and have never been relegated. Especially in 2016/17 and 2017/18, they left with a black eye twice (16th place). The Werkself won relegation first against Eintracht Braunschweig and a year later against Holstein Kiel. Dieter Hecking’s team is currently in 17th place and is five points behind the Savings Bank. Will the rescue succeed this time? There are still some big pieces waiting with Leverkusen, Frankfurt, Freiburg and Bavaria. On the last day of the match there could be a direct confrontation against St. Pauli.
Spurs are also currently in 17th place, but they are above the line as there are 20 teams represented in the Premier League. As in Wolfsburg, the coach has already been changed at Tottenham. Thomas Frank was followed by Igor Tudor. With the PL club yet to win a single league match in 2026, rumors are now swirling of another coaching change.
For years, Sevilla made a name for themselves in Europe and were regularly in the top 5 in La Liga. But the club slipped last season and things look bleak this season as well. They have lost almost half of all their players (14 of 29) and are only three points above the line. The relegation battle in La Liga is at least as exciting as in Germany and will likely be close until the end.
The club is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Of course, other goals were announced before the season. The bitter reality for Robin Gosens’ side is a relegation battle. They are only two points ahead of the relegation zone and, above all, the high number of draws (11) could cause great apprehension until the end.
