Two years after his departure from Borussia Dortmund, Edin Terzic could devote himself to a new task. As reported by the pay TV channel “Sky”, the 43-year-old is in advanced negotiations with the Spanish club Athletic Bilbao. Terzic is expected to succeed club legend Ernesto Valverde, who announced his departure this summer.
Updated April 23 at 9:36 p.m.: According to new information from “Sky”, the agreement would be perfect. Terzic will receive a contract until 2028. Local media “deia.eus” also reported about this previously. However, no announcement is expected in the near future. The reason is that the club wants to respect Valverde as a person and the focus must continue to be on the sport. Bilbao still wants to reach the European Cup (at the table).
This would be Terzic’s first head coaching job outside of Dortmund. He coached the Black and Yellow between December 2020 and June 2021 and between July 2022 and June 2024. In total, he played 128 matches on the BVB bench, won the DFB Cup in 2021, almost became German champion in 2023 and led the club to the Champions League final in 2024. In 91 Bundesliga matches, he scored averaged 1.97 points – only five coaches in history have been better.
Valverde’s third term at Bilbao ends this summer after four years. The 62-year-old Spaniard has been coaching the club since the 2022/23 season and was active for the Basques between 2003 and 2005 and 2013 and 2017. In total, he has played 498 games, meaning he will cross the 500 game mark by the end of the season. In 2024, he won the Copa del Rey with Athletic for the first time in 40 years.
After his time at BVB, Terzic was linked with various clubs. These included Juventus Turin, Tottenham Hotspur, AS Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen.
