New players, old goals: Union Berlin wants to start again

Zingler appeals to fans

Union Berlin president Dirk Zingler has called on fans of the Bundesliga club not to take the successes of recent years as a benchmark. The 59-year-old rejected accusations that have regularly arisen in recent weeks amid the sporting decline that incorrect transfers were made this summer. In the second part of the end-of-year interview published on the club’s channels, he also announced that they would « experience changes in the squad » on the way back to success.

Union boss Zingler: “None of the new guys are to blame”

After promotion to the Bundesliga in 2019, the Union have qualified three times in four seasons for international affairs, with the sporting highlight being fourth place last season, which allowed them to participate in the Champions League. However, the Köpenickers were eliminated without a chance in the group stage, and in the Bundesliga they remained barely above the relegation places during the winter break after a long losing streak. “We agree that we have outperformed in terms of sport in relation to our resources and in relation to our structure. “We didn’t always playfully dominate our opponents, we fought them to the death,” Zingler said.

Zingler can’t give any real reasons for this season’s failure. He rejected the accusation of having signed players this summer who did not suit the club. “We haven’t changed anything, nothing. We brought in some great guys who play a big role in the locker room and play a big role on the field. None of the newcomers, neither Urs Fischer nor Oliver Ruhnert, are responsible for the fact that we lost our evidence,” the president continued.

Zingler described the road back to a top team as a long one. “We will see changes in the team. We will have to reposition ourselves, we will have to start again,” announced the Brandenburger. “We have many topics that we have not addressed as intensively as we should have done in recent years, for good reasons,” added Zingler, citing the integration of young players as an example.
