When Sebastian Hoeneß took over as coach of VfB Stuttgart at the beginning of April 2023, the club was a candidate for relegation with a squad value of 116 million euros. Josha Vagnoman was the only German international player from Swabia who played his first and last international match a few days earlier. A year and a half later, the VfB participates in the Champions League, has a squad value of 314 million euros and is represented six times in the team of national coach Julian Nagelsmann. In Europe’s 15 biggest leagues, only one club has such a large block in a national team.

Since Hoeneß took over, Chris Führich, Deniz Undav, Maximilian Mittelstädt and Angelo Stiller have made their debuts for the DFB and Alexander Nübel and Jamie Leweling have been nominated for October international matches. The first international match of Waldemar Anton, who joined BVB for 22.5 million euros last summer, also took place during Hoeneß’s tenure. The Swabians paid 40.5 million euros for their six national players plus a 1 million euro loan for Nübel to FC Bayern – the sextet’s market value is 120 million euros according to the latest update of the Bundesliga.

BVB, Bayer Leverkusen and FC Bayern currently have the highest number of German national players after VfB, with three nominees each. If it is in good shape, the Munich team is also represented by Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané. Recently, two Bavarian veterans, Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer, resigned from the national team and replacements were found for them in Stuttgart.

SC Freiburg is also represented in these statistics as the fifth Bundesliga team, but not with the German, but with the Austrian selection players Junior Adamu, Michael Gregoritsch and Philipp Lienhart.

Ipswich Town and Atlético Madrid have even more national players from another nation. While there are four Irishmen in the promoted Premier League side, Atleti manager Diego Simeone has four of his fellow Argentines in his squad.

Only Slavia Prague has as many national players as VfB in Europe’s 15 strongest leagues and, like the Swabians, none of them come from their own youth. The six Czechs nominated for the Nations League have a market value of 21 million euros and Slavia paid 11.7 million euros for them.

A nation’s most valuable domestic players are Manchester City, who are represented five times in the Three Lions team. If we add up the market values of Jack Grealish, John Stones, Kyle Walker, Phil Foden and Rico Lewis, we get €296 million. There are 29 clubs across Europe that have three or more national players from one nation in their ranks.
