FC Schalke 04 lost the first match under new coach Kees van Wonderen. The former Champions League club lost 0-1 (0-1) at Hannover 96 on Saturday and remains stuck in 14th place in the 2nd Bundesliga with the 55-year-old Dutchman. At the top, Fortuna Düsseldorf underlines its ambitions.

Hannover’s Fabian Kunze surprised the more than 10,000 Schalke supporters among the 49,000 spectators with a 1-0 lead in the 96th minute. The significantly better Lower Saxony team then failed to add a second goal. The supposed 2-0 from Jessic Ngankam (84th) did not count because it was offside.

Van Wonderen brought in goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann and midfielder Lino Tempelmann, two players who had never been included in the league this season by his predecessor Karel Geraerts. However, the coaching change did not have any positive effects for Schalke.

It wasn’t until the 40th minute that S04 shot on goal for the first time. The guests were far too harmless and unimaginative, especially offensively. Kenan Karaman missed the best opportunity to equalize in stoppage time (90+1). The captain also received his fifth yellow card this season and will therefore miss van Wonderen’s home debut against SpVgg Greuther Fürth next Saturday.

Düsseldorf wins at the bottom – Elversberg misses its 3rd consecutive victory

Fortuna Düsseldorf defended their lead in the 2nd Bundesliga with an away victory at Jahn Regensburg. The Rhinelanders won the match in the last minute 3-0 (1-0). The guests’ goals were scored by Tim Oberdorf (44th minute), Dawid Kownacki (81st) and Vincent Vermeij (89th/penalty) in front of 12,310 spectators at the Jahnstadion.

The Upper Palatinate hosts finished the match with nine. Leopold Wurm first received a yellow-red card (83rd), then Bryan Hein received a red card for a foul on Jona Niemiec. The scene led to the penalty converted by Vermeij shortly before the end of the match.

SV Elversberg missed a new jump into the higher regions of the 2nd Bundesliga. After two recent successes, the Saarland had to settle for a 1:1 (0:1) draw in Preußen Münster despite their overwhelming superiority in the end. In front of 11,507 spectators in the Prussian stadium, a third defeat of the season was in danger of being avoided, which captain Robin Fellhauer (84th minute) avoided thanks to his impressive equalizer. Although they led thanks to Joshua Mees (20th), the promoted Münster remained winless in their fifth home match in the league and thus missed leaving the relegation zone.
