Hamburger SV missed out on top spot in the 2nd Bundesliga. The Hanseatic League side had to settle for a 1-1 (1-0) draw against Hertha BSC on matchday 2. In the 86th minute, Berlin’s Jonjoe Kenny scored the final score, dashing HSV’s hopes of a second win in the second game and securing his team’s first point of the season. Ransford Königsdörffer had already given the hosts the lead in the eleventh minute.
With the exception of a brief phase at the beginning of the match, HSV dominated before the break at the Volksparkstadion, which was sold out with 57,000 people and at its new address Uwe-Seeler-Allee 9. Coach Steffen Baumgart relied on the same as in Hamburg’s 2-1 win against 1. FC Cologne.
Königsdörffer was thus able to return to the front. And the double Cologne scorer kept his promises. After a cross from Bakery Jatta, Königsdörffer took the lead with his third goal of the season. Sebastian Schonlau (18th) and Ludovit Reis (26th) missed chances to increase the lead.
Nuremberg wins game against Schalke 04 in numerical inferiority
In the afternoon matches, Miroslav Klose celebrated his first win as coach in the 2nd Bundesliga with 1. FC Nürnberg after a great comeback against FC Schalke 04. In the hard-fought 3-1 (0-1) on matchday 2, the 2014 world champions also enjoyed a temporary majority after Schalke’s Ron Schallenberg received a yellow-red card in first-half stoppage time.
In the majority phase, Klose’s team turned the situation around with goals from Lukas Schmelzer (47th minute) and Caspar Jander (56th minute). Subsequently, the goalscorer Jander (66th minute) also saw the yellow-red, both teams finished the game with a man less. But Klose’s joker, 19-year-old Rafael Lubach, scored the goal for 3-1 (77th minute) in front of 50,000 spectators.
Schalke clearly dominated in the first half, but their dominance only resulted in a goal from defender Ibrahima Cisse (45th). It was the club’s first points after the false 2-3 start in Karlsruhe. Schalke failed to follow up on their 5-1 start against Braunschweig.
As usual, the fans of both clubs celebrated their friendship in the sold-out Max Morlock Stadium. During the game, Klose, the teams and the crowd experienced many ups and downs. At half-time, Schalke seemed to be the assured winner. But the lead was too narrow. Among other things, Janik Bachmann failed with a header against FCN goalkeeper Jan Reichert, who reacted well.
Draw in Elversberg: 1. FC Köln saves point and loses Uth
1. FC Köln narrowly avoided a false start. Timo Hübers (84th minute) equalised in the final phase for SV Elversberg, making the score 2-2 (1-0). Denis Huseinbasic (21st minute) had given the Billy Goats the lead in front of 9,502 spectators in the Ursapharm Arena in Kaiserlinde, but Fisnik Asllani (46th minute) and Frederik Schmahl (62nd minute) turned the situation around in favour of the Saarlanders.
The Rhinelanders got off to a much better start and pushed the hosts into their own half from the start. Opportunities were still few and far between. The best came from Linton Maina (15th), who was denied by SVE goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof. Six minutes later, the relegated Bundesliga team rewarded themselves with a 1-0 win. After that, Cologne failed to capitalise on their superiority any further.
This one got its revenge in the second round, which Elversberg opened with a bang. The new substitute Asllani scored after just one minute. After that, Cologne was out of trouble. The leadership of the Saarland team by Schmahl, who was also a substitute, left the favourites in shock.
It was also unfortunate that prospect Mark Uth had to leave the pitch injured after just five minutes. The striker celebrated his return after recovering from injury in the 66th minute and went down shortly afterwards without any interference from the opposition. Hübers ultimately saved the guests from the point they deserved.
Fortuna Düsseldorf missed out on their second win of the season: 0-0 against KSC
Few chances, no goals: Fortuna Düsseldorf have missed a flawless start to the season. Coach Daniel Thioune’s team, which failed to reach the relegation zone last season, did not get beyond a 0-0 draw against Karlsruher SC.
A week after the 2-0 victory in Darmstadt, the impact was lacking in front of the 36,103 spectators at the Merkur Spiel-Arena. Although the visitors remained without a win in their eleventh consecutive duel against the Rhinelanders, they considered the deserved draw a success. By sharing the points, both teams missed out on a possible return to first place.
Inspired by the 3-2 home win against Nuremberg a week earlier, KSC started the game bravely and initially took control. The visitors were about to take the lead when Marvin Wanitzek (21st) hit the crossbar with a remarkable free-kick. Apart from that, the entertainment value of the game was limited until the break.
It was only after the restart that Fortuna stepped up the pace and created chances through Tim Rossmann, Shinta Appelkamp (both in the 51st minute) and Jona Niemiec (63rd minute). Despite the increased performance, the stable KSC defence was unable to shake in the final phase.
