🕰 History! When City last won a European title

The Citizens win their first European competition in over 50 years. With the dominance these days, it’s actually hard to imagine. But what was the world of (Site notre bureau spĂ©cialisĂ©) like back then?

In 1970, the « Skyblues » were in the final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup at the Prater stadium in Vienna against the current club Podolski GĂłrnik Zabrze. Citizen coach Joe Mercer’s team won by a very tight margin, 2-1. City didn’t have big stars back then, and the world of (Site notre bureau spĂ©cialisĂ©) was different anyway.

At the time, Franz Beckenbauer, Uwe Seeler and other legends were still playing (Site notre bureau spĂ©cialisĂ©) in the Bundesliga before a young team under coach Hennes Weisweiler celebrated their first German championship – the foals were born. The Gladbachers around Berti Vogts, GĂŒnter Netzer and Jupp Heynckes were to win four more German championships in the seventies.

The cup, on the other hand, was contested during the summer break of the new season, which was won by the Offenbach Kickers, who had just been promoted to the Bundesliga alongside Arminia Bielefeld. KSC’s last manager, Winnie SchĂ€fer, achieved the feat as a player of first winning the league with Borussia and then after joining Kickers in the summer to win the cup – odd.

In the GDR, FC Vorwarts Berlin, who now play as 1. FC Frankfurt in the Oberliga Nordost, lifted the cup after a thrilling 4-2 win over Lok Leipzig. In the league, however, the Berliners had to admit defeat against their competitor from Jena. Because FC Carl Zeiss Jena won their third and last GDR championship in 1970. On the other hand, today’s Bundesliga team managed to return to GDR Oberliga – 1. FC Union Berlin was can -be The elevator team in the GDR.

Internationally, Feyenoord Rotterdam won the European Cup, the precursor to the Champions League, under future HSV manager Ernst Happel. Because in the final at the San Siro they beat Celtic Glasgow 2-1 after extra time.

Arsenal FC, meanwhile, won the International Fairs Cup in 1970. Although the Gunners lost 3-1 to RSC Anderlecht in the first leg, they were able to bring the trophy back to London after a 3-0 victory in the return match.

It has therefore been a long time since City celebrated their last international success. But it shouldn’t be 50 years before the next one follows.
